The lot features an original bronze copper strike U.S. 1877 Rutherford B. Hayes Indian Peace Medal with a correct date and Morgan engraver marks; ex-60+ year old private collection Groveland, New York. The medal shows an oval shape marked on the obverse, “RUTHERFORD B. HAYES PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES” with a raised bust facing left. Marked on the underside of the bust, “MORGAN”. Reverse marked, “PEACE” over “1877” in a glory sunburst panel with the central panel with farmer showing Indian Chief the “benefits of civilization” (Julian) and bottom panel showing a pipe tomahawk crossed with a calumet peace pipe overlapped with a garland wreath. The exergual line between the central panel and bottom panel is marked, “MORGAN”. First strike bronzed copper examples during President Hayes term starting in 1877 were shown with the date, “1877” on the reverse under Peace as well as marked MORGAN under the bust on the obverse as well as marked MORGAN on the exergual line far right. Later under President Garfield he struck the same Peace Medal removing the date and either removing the Morgan mark on the reverse or only an “M”. The coin is correctly twice stamped with the MORGAN mint mark by U.S. Mint Engraver, George T. Morgan. The medal shows a nice clear and crips detail with nice coloring ranging from milk-chocolate to golden. Provenance: From a 60+ year old private collection of early Native American antiques from Groveland, New York. The medal appears to be 60mm by 76mm and weights 131.2 grams approximately. For example see the Indian Peace Medal sold by Heritage in 2008 for $4,312.50.
