Featured in this lot are seven editions of the Western Brewer from 1881-1896 published in Chicago & New York. Throughout its existence, The Western Brewer was published by a number of people and businesses. Robert Wahl, a significant brewing scientist and author, was one of the important individuals connected to the catalog. Brewer Wahl was born in Germany and immigrated to America in the late 1800s. He made a significant contribution to American brewing science and technology. It is important to note that The Western Brewer catalog underwent changes in publishers and editors over time. Among the notable publishers were the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology, which focused on brewing education and research, and Wahl & Henius, a business established by Robert Wahl and Max Henius. The catalog was probably the result of a team effort between numerous specialists, scientists, and business professionals at the time. In the late 1800s, both Chicago and New York published the renowned beer catalog The Western Brewer. Brewers used it as an extensive manual that gave them resources and information they could use to run their businesses. In those days, the catalog was thought of as the main source of information for brewers. A variety of brewing-related content, including descriptions of different brewing ingredients like malt, hops, and yeast, could be found in the Western Brewer catalog. It offered comprehensive details on various brewing processes, recipes for different beer styles, and instructions on the tools and machinery employed in breweries. Additionally, topics like quality control, cellar management, and fermentation were covered in the catalog. The catalog was praised for its thorough and in-depth approach. It provided information on both conventional brewing techniques and cutting-edge technological advancements. The Western Brewer provided inspiration, direction, and useful information for brewers to enhance their brewing procedures and create better beer. The Western Brewer primarily served professional brewers, but it also drew beer enthusiasts and people who were curious about home brewing. Anyone with a passion for beer could use the catalog to learn more about the ingredients and brewing processes. The catalogs include various pictures of products and machines, different styles of bottles and lids, American hop dealers, various barrels, packaging merchants and more. The catalogs are in fair to good condition showing signs of fading, staining and tears to some of the catalogs, but all in good readable condition. The catalogs measure 13 3/16" L x 9 1/8" W x 3/8" D.*
