Featured in this lot we have a collection of newspapers and photographs from the Butte Explosion of 1895. The historic explosion was cause when a warehouse fire caused stored dynamite used in the mine to catch fire and explode. The subsequent explosions, four in total, claimed 57 lives most of those being Fire Fighters and other first responders. The explosion caused large scale damage and destruction as the stoves, piping, tools, and other items where launched like shrapnel from the blast. This collection contains three newspapers, four peoples Gallery photos of some of the fallen firemen, a collection of 17 enlarged photographs, sheet music for a song written in honor of the fallen, and reports on this and other explosions. The newspapers are from January 18th,19th, and 20th 1895, just three days after the blast on the 15th. They describe the steps being taken to find and bury the fallen and the efforts taken to comfort those left behind. The peoples gallery photos show Firefighters David Moses, P. J. Norling, George Fifer, and Sam Ash who all responded to the report of a warehouse on fire and died in the first explosion. The enlarged photos, taken by Al Hooper, show images of the fire departments, funeral precessions, shots of the explosion sites, and more. The collection shows good condition overall with some wear due to age. The largest of the pieces of the collection measure 13 3/4" tall by 10 1/2" wide.
