Featured in this lot is a 1896 revised edition of, "The Boys of '61" by Charles Carleton Coffin. Originally written in 1866 as "Four Years of Fighting" and revised and published in 1896 as "The Boys of '61", this book is an account of the author's experiences as a war correspondent for the Boston Journal in the eastern theater of the Civil War. Charles Carleton Coffin (July 26, 1823 – March 2, 1896) was an American journalist, Civil War correspondent, author and politician. Coffin was one of the best-known newspaper correspondents of the American Civil War. He has been called "the Ernie Pyle of his era," and a biographer, W.E. Griffis, referred to him as "a soldier of the pen and knight of the truth." The book features a blue canvas cover with an American solider on the front lifting his cap with his right hand and holding his rifle in his left. The title and authors name are present in gold lettering on the front cover as well. The spine of the book features the title, the author and an image of a sword, bag, belt and water canister. The book shows good condition with very slight wear to the front cover and spine. The interior pages are in good condition with no signs of tears or foxing. Overall the book is in good condition. It measures 8" L x 5 1/2" W x 1 1/4" D.
