Featured in this lot is this 1897 sterling gravy ladle made by Shreve & Company in San Francisco, California. Silversmith and jewelry retailer Shreve & Company has a long history in San Francisco that dates back to the 19th century. George C. Shreve and Samuel D. Haskell founded the business in 1852 during the California Gold Rush. Their goal was to provide luxury goods and fine jewelry to the expanding group of affluent prospectors and settlers. Shreve & Company experienced steady growth and success in its early years because it quickly established a reputation for providing high-quality silverware, jewelry, and timepieces. The store's early success was facilitated by its location in San Francisco, which at the time was experiencing a Gold Rush boom. George C. Shreve left the business in 1861 to start his own jewelry business, leaving Samuel D. Haskell as the sole shareholder. Haskell worked to maintain the store's stellar reputation, and in 1866 he relocated Shreve & Company to a more noticeable spot on Montgomery Street, where it quickly established itself as a popular hangout for the city's elite. They specialized in making unique pieces for their discerning clientele, which at the time included many powerful people in business, politics, and entertainment. A devastating earthquake and subsequent fire in 1906 completely destroyed San Francisco, including the first Shreve & Company store. Despite the damage, the business was able to bounce back and rebuild, moving to 200 Post Street in Union Square, where it is still located today. Shreve & Company thrived as a top luxury retailer throughout the 20th century, expanding its selection of goods to include luxury watches, gifts, as well as fine jewelry and silverware. Despite several ownership changes over the years, Shreve & Company was able to keep up its prestigious reputation as a leading jeweler and silversmith. The shop continues to be a representation of luxury and refinement, showcasing some of the most prestigious brands in the world alongside their own distinctive designs. The ladle shows a detailed handle and a large, oval shaped bowl. The stampings can be seen on the back of the handle reading, "Shreve & Co. / Sterling / Patent 1897". The ladle shows good condition overall with no signs of obvious damage present. The ladle measures 10 7/8" L x 3 13/16" W. The ladle weighs 113.4 grams.
