Featured in this lot is this forged French fur trading axe head, circa 18th - 19th century. The axe head shows a slight drop excurvate shape. These trade axes were typically forged in Europe, many from France, and traded to the Fur Traders, Frontiersmen, and Native American Indians during the 1700-1800’s. This example shows a heavy forged iron with hammer poll on the back of the oval eyelet hole, which has been flattened from many years of use, with traditional “French” axe blade. The condition of this axe head is good, with oxidation present consistent with the age of this axe head. The measurements of this axe head are 3 3/4" x 6" x 1 1/2".
