Featured in this lot is this amazing, 18th Century French Louis XV pot-bellied walnut clock with comtoise movement. This three piece segmented clock shows a walnut construction with a beautifully carved pot-bellied / violin style case. It houses a freestanding weight-driven pendulum with two key holes and two large weights. The clock itself shows a white color with black roman numeral lettering and two winding key holes. It is surrounded with a bronze colored tin metal and the top design shows what appears to be Apollo's face over a an urn, surrounded by two serpentine or dragon like creatures. Considering the age and region of the clock, the design could be attributed to King Louis XIV, who named himself as the Sun King (Le Roi Soleil). The urn symbolizes memory or time, while the two dragon like figures represent power and wisdom. A Comtoise movement refers to the clock mechanism found in these long case clocks, also known as grandfather clocks, originating in the Franche-Comté region of France. These movements are characterized by their weight-driven nature and distinctive design. The clock shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage noted. Fairly unstable when put together and is standing on its own. The housing around the clock movement can be taken apart to access the clock movement. Interior gears appear to be in good condition with no damage present. Has not been tested for functionality. It measures 101 1/2" H (8 ft 5 1/2 inch) x 18 3/4" W x 11 1/4" D.
