Offered in this lot is an 18th Century French Louis XV Hand-Carved Wood Games Table. The style of 18th century French furniture was guided by the court. When Louis XV, who reigned from 1715–74, focused royal life on the smaller salons of Versailles rather than its grand chambers, it transformed the aesthetics away from the imposing and angular furniture that characterized the style of Louis XIV. A broader focus on comfort and more delicate forms define antique Louis XV furniture, with nature-inspired carvings, wood inlays, curved cabriole legs, and asymmetrical shapes. This handcarved games table is intended to accommodate four players with each side having a small drawer with a simple knob, tenon and mortise construction. The gently carved apron on each side features intricate hand carving of acanthus leaves and vines leading from a stipple texture bordered center carved scallop shell. Acanthus leaf designs highlight the shoulders and lowers of elegant cabriole legs with hoof-style foot design. This piece of furniture intended for the aristocracy and the upper middle class is characteristic of the production of Lyon cabinetmakers in the first half of the 18th century. The table is in very well preserved condition, top exhibits wear from age and use. Measures 27"W x 27"L x 25.75"H and weighs 23 pounds.
