This is a very unique and authentic 18th Century sugar cutting axe with a French origin. The piece shows a solid copper axe head with rear facing hammer poll affixed to a beautiful dark turned oak wood handle. These axes were used to cut Sugar loafs, otherwise called cone shaped blocks. The piece was collected in Montana and was said to have been traded from French fur trappers many years ago. The piece, which shows a circa 1700's age, overall shows good condition with a solid well oxidized head which slides into a turned oak handle. Measures overall 13 1/8"L x 3 7/8"W.
