Presented in this lot is Antique French Hammered Copper & Lavabo Wall Hanging Fountain & Basin mounted on old French Armoire Door, circa late 18th Century. Features original two-piece lavabo; a hammered copper demilune basin with handles on a wood base shelf, and a hung hammered copper top reservoir with finial topped lid and brass spigot. Engraved lions and floral designs surrounding a crown on reservoir face appear to be a coat of arms, ornate stamping on upper and lower edges noted. The carved wood door features intricate carved acanthus and clam design at the top with nicely scrolled center panels. Loop hooks are attached to the upper panel for the reservoir. In the Middle Ages, lavabos (or "wall sinks") were used for hand washing in both domestic and liturgical settings. Before running water was common in every room, lavabo wall fountains were used to wash hands and faces before entering a home. The lavabo is in very nicely preserved condition, bottom of wood door exhibits finish loss from age and use. Measures 23.5"W x 78"H x 12.5"D, shelf is 19"W x 11.25"D. Reservoir is 11"D x 13"W x 17.25"H with lid and spigot. Basin is 15"D x 17"W x 8.25"H. It has a total weight of 54 pounds.
