For your consideration is this beautifully hand crafted fishing creel, Model 80, size 5, made by W.H. McMonies & Company in Portland Oregon in the early 20th century. W.H. McMonies & Co., headquartered in Portland, Oregon, was a well-known maker of high-quality fishing creels in the early twentieth century. Their creels are renowned for their great craftsmanship and unique designs, making them highly sought after by collectors and fishermen. McMonies creels frequently feature hand-woven split willow baskets with tooled leather trim and straps. Some variants feature a leather bag on the front for extra storage. Although the actual spelling of the company's name is McMonies, many of its creels bear a metal cartouche with the company name displayed as MacMonies. McMonies placed a large order for metal cartouches to attach to their creels, but when they arrived misspelled, the creel manufacturer did not want to waste them, so he instructed his workers to utilize them until they were gone, resulting in the misspelled badges on many of the creels. This creel shows a fine split willow weave and tooled leather throughout. The badge on the back reads, "MacMonies Hand Made Portland, Ore.". Above the metal plate it shows two stamps reading, "80" and "5" showing that it is a model 80 and size 5. This creel features a nice leather strap with hand tooling on the larger section of the strap and a front pocket with a zipper. The top also features a zipper to secure it and keep it from opening. It shows good condition overall with wear present from its age but no signs of obvious damage is noted. It measures 9 1/2" L x 16" W x 9 7/8" H and weighs 3 pounds and 10 ounces.
