This is a fantastic early American “Halberd” pike head from a Native American weapons collection. These halberd pike axe’s were used for many years in European wars and battle and eventually during the early American Revolutionary war. They consist of a crescent blade with pike or spike along the top and rear of the piece. This example is of a crude cast then forge finished pattern iron halberd thought to date from the late 18th to 19TH Century. Halberd style heads were also said to have been brought to the America’s by European explorers and fur traders, both the French and Spanish explorers. These were documented as being eventual traded to the Native American tribes and used as axe or tomahawk weapons such as in “American Indian Tomahawks” by Harold Peterson, “Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersmen Belt Axes” by Hartzler & Knowles, and some from the Mitchell Indian Museum as well as other museums off the American Indian in New York (some shown in the pictures for examples sake). Measures 11 inches tall by 7 ¼ inches long.
