For your consideration is this early 1900s Swiss Remontoir Cylindre 6 Rubis silver and gold pocket watch. The son of a watchmaker, Jean-Adrien Philippe was born in 1815 in Bazoche-Guet, France. He was chosen to be Antoine Norbert Count de Patek's second partner after his partnership with Patek Philippe co-founder and watchmaker Francois Czapek failed. (At the time, the business was known as Patek, Czapek & Co.) The crown winding, which Jean-Adrien Philippe created in 1842, was a new revolutionary invention that added to the history of watches. He won a gold medal for this creation at the 1844 Paris Exposition, and it was patented the following year. He met Antoine Norbert Count de Patek at the exhibition, who saw his talent and made him a shareholder with a third of the business. From January 1, 1851 his name was included in the new company name Patek Philippe. After Count de Patek passed away in 1877, Jean-Adrien Philippe became the sole manager of the business. Patek Philippe obtained a patent for a perpetual calendar mechanism in 1889 that did not need manual adjustment. Three years before he passed away, in January 1891, Philippe gave his son Joseph Emile's the business. On January 5, 1894, Jean-Adrien Philippe passed away in Plainpalais, Geneva. The pocket watch shows a white face with gold inlays around the black roman numeral numbers. In the very center of the face around the hands, it shows two blue birds flying around vines with leaves. The watch sits in a Swiss / German .800 silver and gold plated silver pocket watch case. The case shows intricate and beautiful designs throughout the edges and back of the case. The edges show gold plated silver while the larger sections show only a silver construction. The case shows the Swiss hallmark for 800/1000 silver, the German import mark of the crescent moon and crown, the word "Galonne", a French term for gold plated silver and a serial number reading, "35927". The watch can not be wound and does not tick. The watch shows good condition overall with a clean face and no obvious signs of damage. Some wear is present from its use over the years and its age. The watch measures a diameter of 1 3/4 " and a height of 2 1/4". The watch weighs 56.9 grams.
