Featured in this lot is this 1999 1st edition "Collector's Guide to Indian Pipes / Identification and Values" by Lar Hothem. In Fresno (Coshocton County), Ohio, Lar was born on July 26, 1938, to the late Luther Clark and Edith Irene (Maurer) Hothem. He was born and raised in West Lafayette, Ohio, a Wooster High School graduate, a College of Wooster student, and an Ohio State University journalism and social welfare graduate. Lar was an Ohio National Guard member. Lar wrote more than 700 articles while running multiple small businesses, and they have appeared in over 75 regional, national, and specialty publications. In addition to writing the "Arrowheads" chapter of the Time-Life Collectibles Series and frequently contributing to the Columbus Dispatch Sunday Magazine, Lar was a longtime contributing editor to The Antiques Journal. Lar developed a lifelong passion for collecting, researching, and writing about artifacts from North American prehistoric Indian cultures while growing up on the farms of the Hothem family. He began a successful writing career in 1976 and quickly rose to prominence as one of the nation's foremost experts on acquiring artifacts of North American Indians. More than 35 of his books on identification and pricing have proven to be valuable for amateur archaeologists as well as beginning and experienced artifact collectors. Lar contributed frequently to the Ohio Archaeologist, Prehistoric Antiquities Quarterly, and Indian Artifact Magazine. Lar Hothem passed away at the age of 68 in 2006. The book gives extensive information on Native American made pipes and smoking instruments. There are numerous informational sections on how the pipes were made, what to look for and what to avoid when collecting pipes. Many other pipe facts are included throughout the book. The book also features over 1,000 colored photos of all different shapes and kinds of pipes. The book shows good condition overall with little to no wear and no signs of obvious damage are present.
