For your consideration is this 1903 edition of "The North American Indians Volumes I & II", by George Catlin, publisher John Grant, Edinburgh, Scotland, 400 illustrations, fold-out 1833 map of the USA identifying locations of Indian tribes. "North American Indians Being Letters And Notes On Their Manners, Customs, And Conditions, Written During Eight Years' Travel Amongst The Wildest Tribes Of Indians In North America, 1832-1839" was written after Catlin traveled to the American West on five separate occasions between 1830 and 1836 and again two years later, eventually visiting over fifty tribes including the Pawnee, Omaha, Ponca, Mandan, Hidatsa, Cheyenne, Crow, Assiniboine Sioux, and Blackfeet, and taking careful notes on their behavior, traditions and ways of life. He created over 500 paintings and 700 sketches. George Catlin (1796-1872) was an American lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the American frontier. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians.
