This is an exceedingly rare circa 1905-1910 quarter sawn oak lift-top drafter's cabinet made by Yawman And Erbe Manufacturing Company in Rochester, New York. Henry A. Yawman and John C. Erbe established the Yawman and Erbe Manufacturing Co. in Rochester, New York, in 1880. The business soon rose to the top of the market by specializing in the production of premium file cabinets, index cards, and other office equipment. The business was well known for its creative designs and excellent craftsmanship, which contributed to its growth as a dependable and reputable manufacturer. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Yawman and Erbe Manufacturing Co. kept growing and expanding, and by the 1950s, it was among the biggest producers of office equipment worldwide. The company was acquired by the Gulton Industries in 1959, which continued to produce products under the Yawman and Erbe brand name until the late 1970s. The cabinet shows an oak wood construction and can be folded out to reveal the cabinet storage area and a large desk for drawing, writing and looking at blueprints and other large documents. The front of the cabinet shows a small metal plaque reading, "Yawman And Erbe MFG. Co. / Y and E / Rochester, N.Y., U.S.A.". On the inside of the lift-top, it reads, "PTD Jan. 5th 1909 / Other Pat. P.D.O" inscribed in the wood and shows brass components for holding index cards. There are a total of 20 large folders within the cabinet that are numbered, lettered, and labeled with some housing old documents. The cabinet shows good condition and good working condition as all the folders are moveable and the cabinet folds out to expose the hidden desk. There is slight wear to the folders and some of the wood components from years of use and its vintage age but no obvious signs of damage are present. When opened, the cabinet measures 57" L x 45 5/8" W x 46 3/4" H. When closed the cabinet measures 13 1/2" L x 45 5/8" W x 46 3/4" H. The drafting portion folds up and away. This would make a fantastic working or art table that folds away into a quarter sawn furniture beauty. Could also be referred to as a draft table, fold out draft table, fold out draft table cabinet. The cabinet is in classic American Arts and Crafts or Mission pattern. One of the most rare Yawman & Erbe furniture pieces.
