For your consideration is this 1929 first edition of “Sand” by Will James. The book was published in 1929 by Charles Scribner's Sons, located in New York and London. The illustrations are from drawings and paintings by Will James and they are mostly full-page pieces, including the front piece. The book is bound in green cloth, stamped black lettering, a 3 ¾" red stamped line on the front cover. It is a first edition. Set in the high plains, the characters are cowboys and horses. At the heart of the story is the hero's long duel with the black stallion and how "the little grain of sand within him" starts to grow. Will James (1892-1942), artist and writer of the American West, was born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault. It was during his creative years everyone grew to know him as Will James. During the next several years, he drifted, worked at several jobs, was briefly jailed for cattle rustling, served in the army, and began selling his sketches. In 1922, he sold his first writing. The overall condition of this book is good, with creases along the inside covers of the spine and browning to the pages, consistent with its age. The measurements of this book are 8 1/4" x 6” x 1 1/2".
