For your consideration is this 1929 First Edition of “Sand” by Will James. Publisher Grosset & Dunlap, New York. The illustrations are from drawings and paintings by Will James and they are mostly full-page pieces, including the front piece. This is a story about "sand", the gumption it takes to tackle the challenges of life. Set in the high plains, the characters are cowboys and horses. And the heart of the story is the hero's long duel with a black stallion and how "the little grain of sand within him" starts to grow. Will James (1892-1942), was an artist and writer of the American West and, in particular, horses. James wrote the 1926 book "Smoky the Cowhorse". It was awarded the John Newbery Medal in 1927. The tan cloth stamped illustrated hardcover is in good condition. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing. Original illustrated paper dust jacket exhibits slight tears and scuffing.
