Samuel Houston (1793-1863) was an American general and statesman who played an important role in the Texas Revolution. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas, the only individual to be elected governor of two different states in the United States. In 1809, at the age of 16, Sam Houston ran away from his home in Tennessee and lived among the Cherokees. He was adopted by Chief Oolooteka and given the name Colonneh or the “Raven.” He developed a deep, life-long affection for the tribe and considered the Cherokee his surrogate family. Marquis James was an American journalist and author, twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his works. The brown cloth bound hardcover exhibits scuffing and staining, spine loose at both joints. Intact deckled bottom and fore edge pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing. Measures 5.5"W x 8.25"L x 1.5"D.
