This is a forged iron dag fighting knife from the mid-19th Century from the Plains Native American Indians from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The piece shows a typical large double-sided blade and pointed classic dag knife shape with wide large blade being blacksmith hand-forged and having a full tang. The blade has a thick iron belly with tapered blade, not quite sharpened, and pointed blunt edge end. The tang shows the forged folding. The piece doesn’t have any discernable markings and could be from the Southern Plains, Northern Plains or Prairie Plains. It is most definitely dating to the mid-1800’s and is a unique piece. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. Measures overall 11.75”L by 1 7/8”W.
