This is a phenomenal fully quilled Athabascan / Athapaskan (Dene) hide belt from the 19th Century with truly fine detail. The belt shows an incredibly fine tight weave using natural porcupine quills in a geometric pattern with rich natural mineral pigment dyed colors. The belt is bordered in faceted metal seed beads. The piece is from the Yukon Northwest Territory dating to the 19th Century possibly from the Northern Slave or Dogrib Athabaskan speaking peoples. One of the finest quillwork pieces as far is micro-details go, that we have offered. The piece is done on Indian tanned Caribou hide which shows mostly supple soft condition with some stiffening, some wear spots and nice patina, being mostly well preserved. The belt is very similar to the 19th Century Athapaskan Quilled belt Circa 1850 for $3,500 in the Michael D. Higgins collection. Also see the Athapaskan porcupine quilled bracelets from the Dene 19th Century in the National Museum of Scotland collection. Truly a fantastic very fine porcupine quilled belt in well preserved condition. The quill shows mostly well retained, present work with some very small imperfections and worn spots and a little bead loss. Measures overall 25”L end to end by 1 3/8”W. U6.
