This is a tremendous polychrome painted parfleche envelope from the 19th-century from Blackfeet Chief Little Dog, Last Pikunni War Chief, of all the Blackfeet from the Blackfeet Indian Reservation outside of Glacier Park in Montana. Chief Little Dog’s grandson Harvey Little Dog was the keeper of the family possessions and passed away in 2010. This came directly from the family and was said to have been owned and used by Chief Little Dog and his descendants. His warlike activities spanned an area from the Blackfoot territories to the Colorado river, and he was the leader of the Black-Patched-Moccasin Band. He died in 1916. The piece exhibits a single piece of parfleche rawhide folded into a classic Northern Plains Envelope pattern and covered with mineral pigment polychrome geometric painting, consistent with other Blackfeet / Blackfoot examples. There are Indian tanned hide ties at the center. The bag shows a yellow aged coloring with some paint loss and a faint Indian brain / smoked smell. The paint shows colors of red, blue, yellow and shapes of triangles, diamonds, a four-point morning star or star amongst others. What is truly unique about this piece is its size, this is a miniature or sampler / doll piece showing a size of 8 3/8-inches by 4-inches. Provenance: From the Chief Little Dog, Last Pikunni War Chief, of all the Blackfeet. From his grandson Harvey Little Dog who was the keeper of the family possessions and passed away in 2010. Directly from the family and was said to have been owned and used by Chief Little Dog or his descendants. Chief Little Dog’s was the leader of the Black-Patched-Moccasin Band of the Blackfeet and he died in 1916. From the Little Dog family from the Blackfoot Indian Reservation outside of Glacier National Park in Northern Montana. Several photographs of Blackfeet Pukunni War Chief Little Dog photographs are shown in the photo-gallery. For reference of Miniature Painted Parfleche Envelopes from the third to fourth quarter 1800’s see the set sold by Heritage Auctions in May 2015 for $2,750.00.
