This is a tremendous Blackfeet Chief Little Dog, Last Pikunni War Chief Glacier Park Montana, beaded saddle blanket from the 19th-century. The blanket is from Blackfeet Chief Little Dog, Last Pikunni War Chief, of all the Blackfeet from the Blackfeet Indian Reservation outside of Glacier Park in Montana. Chief Little Dog’s grandson Harvey Little Dog was the keeper of the family possessions and passed away in 2010. This came directly from the family and was said to have been owned and used by Chief Little Dog and his descendants. His warlike activities spanned an area from the Blackfoot territories to the Colorado river, and he was the leader of the Black-Patched-Moccasin Band. He died in 1916. The piece is comprised of an old 1800’s wool trade blanket with old red stroud wool border showing a large wide blanket strip comprised of Indian tanned hide sinew and thread sewn covered in 1800’s old glass trade seed beads. The beads show colors of chalk white, red white heart and cobalt with an hourglass like shape with two intersecting triangles with tab and other forms. The blanket shows a Blackfeet / Blackfoot and Plateau to Crow Apsaalooke form from the 1800’s and has wonderful provenance. Provenance: From the Chief Little Dog, Last Pikunni War Chief, of all the Blackfeet. From his grandson Harvey Little Dog who was the keeper of the family possessions and passed away in 2010. Directly from the family and was said to have been owned and used by Chief Little Dog or his descendants. Chief Little Dog’s was the leader of the Black-Patched-Moccasin Band of the Blackfeet and he died in 1916. From the Little Dog family from the Blackfoot Indian Reservation outside of Glacier National Park in Northern Montana. Several photographs of Blackfeet Pukunni War Chief Little Dog photographs are shown in the photo-gallery. Interestingly the two side blanket strips shows a hourglass with rectangular tab and the blanket strip on the end, in the same beadwork shows the hourglass with diamond or “eye” shapes intersecting at the middle, a unique and beautiful attribute. The saddle blanket is well kept with three large wide sections of Indian tanned hide blanket / war shirt strips with little to no bead loss, the blanket is double thickness, folded over with some fraying at the edge and a worn through spot on the reverse but overall, well kept in good form. Measures overall 31-inches by 31-inches when laid flat.
