The lot features a mid-1800’s damascus octagon barrel percussion side hammer dueling pistol with “USIS” (United States Indian Service) noted as being from a United States Indian Service Cherokee scout from the Black Mountain reservation in Western North Carolina from an ex-Museum collection. This is a second quarter to mid-1800’s side hammer percussion black powder dueling pistol with Damascus octagonal barrel and engraved finish. The pistol has a ramrod, solid walnut carved stock with checkering, and flaring large end that shows an engraved silver cap pommel bottom. The trigger guard is highly engraved as the receiver is as well. The entire stock is covered in old brass metal trade tacks adorned by a Native American owner. The left side is stamped, “USIS” which is noted as being for the United States Indian Service, a similar stamp as other example shown. Provenance: Noted as being from an East Coast Museum collection, where it was noted as being from the Cherokee of the Black Mountain Indian reservation in Western North Carolina and being United States Indian Service. The hammer draws back and trigger releases. Overall well kept with some small, minor stress cracks and nicks, dings and scratches, but overall good condition. Measures 12-inches in length.
