The lot features an extraordinary Indian tanned buffalo hide from the Plains Indians paired with a wonderful and Scarce 1840-1850 Allen & Thurber Single Shot Side Hammer Percussion Target Pistol. This is a very scarce 19th-century Plains Indian altered, tacked and owned Allen and Thurber pistol. The piece shows a replaced Colt pattern brass trigger guard held into place with wrappings of Plains Indian wrapped sinew and parfleche wrappings, the grip is adorned with deeply patina'd mellow 1800's solid brass square shank trade tacks.This is a scarce Allen & Thurber large frame single shot side hammer percussion target pistol, inscribed showing an adjustable rear site which extends back past the hammer to the adjustable screw. The left barrel flat of the octagonal central portion is marked, "ALLEN & THURBER / WORCESTER / CAST-STEEL" three-line address. The pistol shows a rounded thick barrel with six hand cut spiral twisted rifled barrel with ramrod included and the end shows a pair of smooth walnut bag shaped grips. This is chambered in .40 caliber. This is paired with a Great Plains beaded buffalo / bison hide large scabbard which is clearly made for this Plains Indian tacked and altered pistol. The sheath shows thick buffalo frilly fringes and is covered in glass trade seed beads that are all sinew sewn showing medium blue, orange, greasy light blue and cobalt. The top has a flap top which is beaded. The sheath shows a supple soft finish with some wear and coloring. For reference of early 1800's tacked single shot pistols paired with Plains beaded sheaths see the set sold by NAAC in June 2023 for $21,250. The antique black powder pistol, dating to 1840 to 1850 has a serial number of 9 or 59. Measures overall 13-inches long with the barrel being approx. 8-inches long octagonal and round thick example. Hammer pulls back and lightly holds, trigger releases, but all is lose. Sheath is approx. 15-inches long by 8-inches wide. ANTIQUE Firearm NO FFL.
