This is a rare Buffalo Hide Cheyenne pipe bag, referred to as a “four tab bag” by collectors dating to circa 1880’s. The bag is said to have been collected from the Wind River Cheyenne reservation and is comprised of Indian brain tanned Buffalo Bison hide with old yellow mineral pigment ocher, is sinew sewn and has long Indian hide fringes hanging off the bottom. The pipe bag is beautifully beaded on both sides in typical Cheyenne 19th Century pattern and colors with a classic “bar pattern” and still has the original tie straps still attached. The top of the bag shows four folds of Indian tanned hide with a split tail like design and fancy beaded edge, referred to as a four tab pattern, and shows green mineral pigment ocher coloring. The bag shows all period correct glass trade seed beads in colors of greasy blue, greasy yellow, chalk white, semi-transparent green, semi-transparent rose and cobalt. The bag is in very good well kept condition, with only minor wear from true age and use with soft supple hide. Good, original period correct Cheyenne bags with the four-tab pattern are scarce and is truly a wonderful piece of original Native American art. For reference see the circa 1870 Southern Cheyenne Beaded Pipe Bag with four tabs which was sold by our company in October 2022 for $5,355 (shown w/ bp) from the same collection as this bag. Provenance: From the Mary Lou & Pierre DuPont collection of St. Louis, Missouri. Measures overall 39 inches long by 5 ½ inches wide.
