This is an outstanding, very scarce authentic original Cheyenne beaded hide triangle flat belt pouch tail bag dating to circa 1860-1870’s. Cheyenne belt pouchs with this long triangle shape are immensely rare. For example see the bag sold by Skinner in 2015 for $18,450 and another sold by Skinner in 2017 for $9,840 (both sold within their estimates of $15,000-$20,000 and $8,000-$12,000). This bag exhibits a thick harness saddle trade leather construction with tail end being sewn with sinew and covered in period correct 19th century glass trade seed bead beadwork on all sides. The beadwork has an iconic geometric pattern in classic Cheyenne form showing colors of red white heart, greasy yellow, medium blue, cobalt. The back is entirely covered in beadwork and shows a classic Cheyenne tab pattern. The outside edge shows fancy beadwork and the top has a beaded flap which also shows a large brass trade bead with cone shape. The top has a leather belt strap and the bottom a braided Indian tanned hide long bottom fringe with red ocher mineral pigment color. The bottom fringe also shows an old mid-1800’s E. Faber pencil, as marked, along with a solid brass bead. The bag has a long tail like triangle flap. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection. Possibly one of the more scarce Indian Wars era beaded items in the sale with wonderful collecting history. Measures overall 29"L (the body is 8.5”L, bottom fringe is 14.5”L and top strap is 7.5”L) by 2"W. Likely of a better overall beadwork appeal than the example that nearly brought $20,000 in 2015.
