This is a phenomenal Eastern Plains Calumet steatite and silver pewter inlaid pipe bowl with faint engraving of “1877” from mid-to-third-quarter 19th-century; ex-Hindman / Cowans / Freeman. The “T” pipe bowl is expertly carved from black steatite showing a beveled design with a tapered octagonal beveled cut bowl with silver pewter inlaid intricate pattern that stretches around the entire bowl and caps the top of the bowl. The bowl is faintly inscribed / engraved with a date of “1877” and a name that appears to be overall “JOE DIE OILET 1877”, likely when the bowl was acquired by a white settler, putting the bowl at circa 1850-1870's. Provenance: Previously found to be an authentic 19th-century Steatite Bowl by the experts at Freeman’s / Cowans / Hindman. The bowl shows dark coloring on the inside with rich Tobacco staining and smell from previous use. Truly a fantastic example with unique dated engraving. Measures overall 4 3/8-inches long by 3.25-inches high by 1 1/8-inches wide. A calumet, from the French word chalumet, meaning reed or flute, was a profoundly sacred object to many Native American tribes. These pipes were often commonly referred to in western lore as “peace pipes” and were generally used for more ceremonial purposes; to celebrate momentous occasions, ratify treaties & seal agreements both with in and outside of the tribe.
