The lot features a 19th-century Frontier American trade axe head collected by Jon LaRue in 1905 from the Cherokee Indians of North Carolina. The original head features a hand-forged iron trade axe head with flaring thick blade. The head dates to the mid-19th century and has a squared off eye and back with nice patina and coloring. The axe has a later added wooden haft with brass covered metal tacks, a large hole holding an old hide wrist thong, Indian tanned hide. Provenance: Collected by Jon LaRue in 1905 from the Cherokee Indians of North Carolina. Later sold to collector Dale Harrison of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1990 at the Ohio Gun Collector’s Association Show in Mansfield, Ohio. The head is secured to the haft with a square iron spike in the eyelet hole. The head measures 7-1/2 inches long by 4-3/4 inches wide across the bottom of the blade. Total length without hide is 14-inches long.
