This is a fabulous 19th Century carved wood mirror club with tacking from the Prairie Indians from the Ghost Dance Movement. The club mirror board is carved from a solid piece of wood having a round pommel base with pierced center having a beveled carved gripping area tapering outward with a “V” cut top edge that has a stepped staircase incised carved design. The center of the club has pierced holes with a rounded smooth finish as well as being inlaid with an old silver backed trade mirror held into place with 1800’s square shank solid brass old trade tacks. The top of the club shows a four-point morning star and crescent moon incised carvings both documented as being Ghost Dance movement symbols. The center also shows a unique incised carving in an “X” like form. The entire club has a nice dark red ocher / ochre coloring and wonderful deep chocolate and shiny patina from honest age and use. Provenance: From a large, private Ohio Native American collections as well as a prominent Native American collection in Paris, France. For another example, see the Apsaalooke Crow Mirror with the similar club shape with rectangular inlaid mirror and tacked design, noted as being from Bear-goes-to-the-other-gorge as a Ghost Dance Mirror sold by Bonhams Auction in 2022 for $16,575 (w/ bp). For another example of a mirror board with club shape see the Sioux Chief's Looking Glass Carved Dance Mirror from the early 19th century in the Brooklyn Museum collection accession number 50.67.96. Measures 20.5-inches long by 3.75-inches wide.
