The lot features two items recovered from Lincoln County, New Mexico Sheriff’s including a set of Hiatt Best Handcuffs and a Davenport Mallory & Co. padlock both dating to the 1800’s and are from the Tombstone Museum collection. Both were recovered from Lincoln County, N.M. and were used by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s. The first is a set of Hiatt Best Warranted Wrought 28 K.C.C. HARD handcuffs dating to the 1870-1880’s. The set includes a later added but functioning GHB marked key. Next is the heart shaped padlock which is marked on the brass keyhole cover, “D.M. & Co.’ and includes the original working key. This was made by the Davenport Mallory & Co. and likely dates to circa 1860-1870’s. Both of these items were known, especially the cuffs, to be used by Sheriff officers and both have a fine provenance as being recovered from the Lincoln County Sheriff and are from the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum collection. Hiatt Best handcuffs have been documented as being used in the Old West, including Texas and the New Mexico / Arizona area, see the set from Sheriff Frank M. Canton (Joe Horner) sold by Cowan’s in April 2016. Handcuffs measure when laid out 10-inches long by 3.25-inches wide without the key. Lock is 3.25-inches by 2.5-inches. Museum numbers: LO-91, LO-X3.
