Featured in this lot is this Pawnee river otter quilled pipe bag circa 19th century. Central Plains quillwork attributed to the Pawnee is exceedingly rare with this being a stunning example. The pipe bag exhibits an artist design consisting of Indian brain-tanned hide and backed in Parfleche or boiled river otter hide showing its ears and little whiskers along with being sinew and thread sewn. The porcupine quill quillwork is astounding with large size having natural dyes and the continuation of the classic Central Plains styling. The bag is well kept with soft, clean hides. The condition of this Pawnee pipe bag is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this pipe bag is 31 1/2" x 5 7/8.
Provenance: From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses.
The pipe bag was featured in a March in Montana auction and comes with its tag numbered ML02.
