Featured in this lot is this Sioux beaded and quilled tobacco pipe bag circa 19th century. The tobacco bag features an Indian tanned hide and sinew sewn bag with natural color and a segment of porcupine quill quillwork and a fully symmetrical beaded segment above. The pattern shows Sioux geometric design that shows trade seed beads that include colors as follows: greasy yellow, chalk white, medium blue, sky blue, red white hearts, and medium green. The tobacco bag shows the unique and highly desirable spine bead work shown on both sides of the bag. The fringe show parfleche rawhide strips which are wrapped in porcupine quill quillwork with natural dyes of red, and white. The condition of this Sioux tobacco bag show patina to the Indian tanned hide and some wear to the sinew sewn seams with one of the lengths of porcupine quill strips broke but shows a well preserved look to this artifact. Provenance: Purchased and found to be authentic from Bonhams Skinners Auction Lot #1181. From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses.
