The lot features a 19th-century elbow pipe and wooden stem from the Sioux of the Northern Plains from the ex-C.M. Russell Museum Great Falls, Montana and John Kleinschmidt collections. The pipe bowl is carved from hardstone with a very dark black / grey to tan / red coloring, with a well smoked bowl. The bowl has a repair at the elbow and chipping / damage at the pipe end. The stem is carved from a tree branch and has a nice dark coloring. The piece dates to the 19th century / 1800’s.
Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Catherine A. O'Dell. An attached museum tag reads, "1396-87 O'Dell". Bowl measures 2.75-inches by 2.5-inches by 1-inch, stem is 13.75-inches, together approximately 15.75-inches in length. It was on display at the C.M. Russell museum.
