This is a rare 19th-century Sioux octagonal gun barrel hide scrapper covered in buffalo hide from the ex-C.M. Russell Museum Great Falls, Montana and John Kleinschmidt collections. The piece exhibits a large buffalo bore octagon rifle barrel which has been forged flat at one end with a flaring scrapper end with serrated edge. The piece is covered in Indian tanned Buffalo / Bison hide which is sinew sewn and has a thick Indian tanned Buffalo / Bison wrist throng loop as well. The octagon shape can been seen throughout and the scrapper has a nice deep patina from honest age and use.
Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. Catherine A. O'Dell. An attached museum tag reads, "1396-87 O'Dell". The scrapper itself without the strap measures 11.25-inches long, the barrel is about 1.25-inch in diameter and the scrapper end is 1.5-inches at its widest / blade. The strap is 8.5-inches long. This was on display at the C.M. Russell museum.
