Featured in this lot is an Original Vintage Box of .44 Henry Flat Rim-Fire Cartridges, 50 Rounds, circa 1866 to 1911. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. Proper tan coloured 2 piece cardboard box with green lid label and side labels. Top label is marked, ".50 .44 CAL., HENRY RIM-FIRE CARTRIDGES SWAGED 44 HENRY FLAT MODEL 1866 BULLETS THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN., U.S.A.", also marked with 2 encircled "U" trademarks. The Union Metallic Cartridge Company (UMC) was an early manufacturer of cartridge ammunition for small arms. UMC produced ammunition specifically for the Winchester Model 1866 rifle and revolvers, often referred to as the ".44 Henry Flat/Model 1866" cartridge. The UMC .44 Henry rimfire cartridge had a flat nose bullet, a copper casing, and a "U" headstamp. The Model 1866 rifle, known as "Yellowboy," was a major success and was in production until 1899. UMC Co. continued to operate independently until 1912 when they merged with Remington Arms. Original UMC green label on the top and on the sides. Original orange guarantee label on the bottom. The cartridges have the "U" stamp. Wear and soiling from age and handling exhibited on box, dried original cartridge lubrication and age related oxidation observed on cartridges.
