The lot features a fantastic 19th-century Sioux bowcase and quiver set with bow and arrows collected from the Lakota Sioux at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The bowcase and quiver are comprised of Indian brain-tanned buckskin hide that is sinew sewn as well as some trade thread and old hide glue sections, furthermore it is adorned with old yellow ochre / ocher mineral pigment paint. The original Indian hide shoulder strap is still attached and the set shows four large sections of beadwork that wrap around the opening and end of the bowcase and quiver. The beadwork shows all old 1800’s glass trade seed beads with the quiver opening having a stepped triangular tipi like design in chalk white, cobalt, greasy green and greasy yellow. The quiver end shows a further stepped triangular design with a greasy blue background and design in cobalt, greasy yellow, red-white heart and chalk white. The bowcase shows a matching stepped diamond design with a light padre blue background and pattern in greasy yellow, greasy blue, greasy green, cobalt and red white heart. The bag shows original Indian brain-tanned buckskin hide fringes with yellow ocher painted finish. The set shows several sections of old red stroud clothe wrapped around. The bow is carved wood with a wrapping of thick Indian tanned hide, old red stroud trade clothe, and old calico trade clothe held into place with hide glue, as well there is the sinew bowstring still intact. The arrows are both stripped wood stems with forged sheet metal points having turkey feather fletching, all tied with sinew wraps and remnants of mineral pigment paint shown on both the arrows and bow. Provenance: From a private large collection of beadwork and weapons from the Native Americans of the 1800’s in Cincinnati, Ohio; noted as being recovered from the Lakota Sioux at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in the early 1900’s from a single family collection. Overall the set shows minor wear from age and use with mostly supple hides having some stiffening spots, some loss to the ocher paint with dry and flaking spots, little to no bead loss and some old repairs present. The bowcase without fringe measures 31.5-inches in length, quiver without fringe is 18.5-inches long, bow is 40-inches long, arrows are about 25-inches long.
