This is a fabulous circa 19th-century Comanche rattlesnake concho men’s belt. The belt exhibits a harness trade saddle leather belt wrapped in rattlesnake skin with a green mineral pigment ocher / ochre painted or dyed finish showing nine large German nickel silver conchos. The nine concho / conchas are all German nickel silver with a domed design with soldered ring on the inside tied with Indian hide to the leather belt. The conchos have a nice patina. The belt has a large heavy white brass buckle and the belt slide is covered in rattle snake skin as well. The belt likely dates to the mid-19th-century. This is a classic, documented early Comanche pattern of men’s belt; see the circa 1865 Comanche Cartridge Belt with commercial leather and large German silver conchos sold June 2024 by Heritage Auctions for $4,550 (w/ bp) and the Comanche 19th century Concho Belt with trade harness leather and large conchos sold February 2019 by NAAC for over $3,000 (w/ bp) both in the same shape and manufacture of this example. Provenance: The belt is from the ex- 2004-2005 Allard sale where it was found to be an authentic 19th-century Comanche example; and from a Northern Montana collection. The rattlesnake skin and belt have stiffened with the end of the belt where it connects to the buckle has a crack. Measures overall 39-inches long overall by 2 5/8-inches wide at the middle. Each concho is about 2-inches in diameter. Buckle is 3-inches by 2 3/8-inches.
