The lot features a brass tacked leather wrapped wood box which is stamped on the inside of the lid “UNITED STATES INDIAN SERVICE / ADJUSTANT OFFICE / ROSEBUD AGENCY / DAKOTA TERRITORY.” The box shows an old wood construction and is covered in harness saddlery leather showing an incredible brass tacked cushion pattern. The top of the box has a nice curve and the leather with tack design is found on all four sides and the top of the lid. The base is bare. The inside of the box has leather as well and a red felt lining. The USIS in Rosebud Sioux Reservation is located south-central region of South Dakota and is home to the Lakota Sioux, Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians. The collector stated boxes such as this were issued for document containment. The box appears to be a fantastic well-crafted 19th Century example with possibly original or possibly later added markings. Measures overall 12 ¼ inches long by 7 inches wide by 4 inches tall.
