The lot features a large 19th-century Sioux quilled and beaded pipe bag. The bag is comprised of Indian tanned Buffalo / Bison hide with massive size showing beadwork along the top rim down the sides of the bag and a large fully beaded section covering the entire bottom portion of the body. The beadwork is all sinew sewn with original 19th Century period correct glass trade seed beads with colors of cobalt, greasy yellow, red white heart candy apple, greasy light blue, and medium green. The base of the bag has sections of parfleche rawhide that are remnants of mid-1800’s Sioux polychrome painted parfleche envelope with some of the original paint still visible from one side. The parfleche strips are wrapped in porcupine quill quillwork with a tab design in colors of red and natural cream. Below the quillwork is a nice double row of Indian tanned hide fringes which are slightly stiffened and have a nice original patina. The bag shows sinew sewing and is well kept. There is some slight bead loss and thick hide with nice original patina. Provenance: From the private collection in Mobridge, South Dakota. Measures overall 45-inches long overall with top strap, the bag itself with bottom fringes is 34-inches in length by 7.75-inches wide.
