The lot features an attractive split horn war bonnet attributed to the Comanche Indians of Northern Texas. The headdress is comprised of Indian brain-tanned Great American Bison Buffalo hide cap adorned with ermine hides, old trade clothe, grey horse tail hair and a wonderful beaded brow band. The split horns are polished and strung together with old crenshaw twine with beads and strips of old red horse tail hair fringes hanging from the tips which are rawhide wrapped. The brow band, which appears to be a 19th-century remnant, exhibits Indian tanned hide with a tab-geometric design done in period glass trade seed bead beadwork that is sinew sewn. The top of the bonnet and trailer is comprised of white ermine hides with a green dyed coloring. The ends of each ermine hide at the trailer have a bifurcated red trade clothe split fringe. There are fringes at each temple which include a drop of grey horse tail hair with brass thimble top along with a strip of old trade clothe. There is a tie strap with classic glass trade beads. The top section holding the split horns are strung with red white heart pony trade beads and a few bras beads. The headdress is approximately 32-inches from the top hair fringes to bottom of hair fringes by 14.75-inches wide horn to horn. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Ted Levy’s of Santa Rosa, California. Please review the pictures and piece for your own opinion and representation of age.
