Lot consisting of two matching antique sperm whale teeth. These teeth probably date to the late 19th to early 20th century and came out of an old collection housed in Arizona. The teeth measure approx. 4 1/2” – 4 3/4" in length, and approx. 1 1/4” – 1 3/4" across the tapered bases. Both teeth are especially solid with small tapered hollow cavities at the bottom measuring only about 1 1/2" deep. These specimens display a fine classically curved shape that have not been sanded or altered. They display a lovely cream and beige aged patina. Most sperm whale teeth today have been bought up by scrimshanders who sand and polish the surface to decorate with their unique art. Original unaltered
specimen examples like this closely matched set are difficult to find today. Superb display items from a
distant time when whale oil illuminated the civilized world. The teeth together weigh 8oz.
