Featured in this lot is a Remington Rider model rim fire pocket revolver chambered in .31 caliber. The revolver features a five shot cartridge cylinder, 2" long octagonal barrel, double action, and checkered grips. This is one of the rarest of Remington products with an estimated 2,000 total production including the original percussion model plus the later cartridge conversion model. To quote from Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms: “This distinctive double action revolver was designed by Joseph Rider of Newark, Ohio. The Remington Company contracted with Rider for the manufacture of the Pocket Model, and he became a valued employee of the company, moving to Ilion. One of the first double action revolvers made in quantity in the United States…early specimens have a dovetailed cone type front sight while later production had the pin type front sight.” The entire run was manufactured from 1860 to 1873- no doubt the later production were the cartridge models. The double action mechanism in which one merely pulls the trigger to revolve the cylinder, cock and fire the weapon works intermittently as does the single action in which one pulls the hammer to the rear before pulling the trigger to fire. The barrel is marked "REMINGTON'S ILION. N.Y." The exterior shows an attractive patina with the checkered grips showing good condition (These are often badly cracked or replaced altogether). This revolver shows good condition overall with some of the mechanical components not fully operational. The revolver weighs 8oz. Serial Number: 3896. This firearm qualifies as an antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*
