This lot includes the First Edition of "Bird Woman" by James Willard Schultz, 1918, Houghton Mifflin Company Boston and New York publishers. "Bird Woman (Sacajawea) The Guide Of Lewis and Clark Her Own Story Now First Given To The World By James Willard Schultz with illustrations", is a moving account of the life of Sacajawea recounted as told to some of the Sioux Indians and frontiersmen who actually met her and other members of the Lewis and Clark expedition. They tell, not only of her heroism during the great expedition, but of her early life, and the story of her capture by hostile Indians which ended in her marriage to a French trader. The author was a trader who lived much of his life among the Indians of Montana and knew members of Sacajawea's tribe personally. Schultz (1859-1947), was an American writer, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader and historian of the Blackfeet Indians. He came out West as a young man in the late 1800s and lived among the Blackfeet for many years. Speaking their language and using sign language, he absorbed hundreds of stories about the tribe, its history and oral tradition. Eventually Schultz wrote numerous books about his western experiences. This green cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in nice condition, front cover gold gilt depiction of a bird perched on a tree limb, slight scuffing exhibited to cover edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning. Measures 5.5"W x 8"L x 1.25"D, weight 1lb, 2oz.
