Featured in this lot is this 1872 first edition of, "American Pioneers And Patriots Miles Standish, Captain Of The Pilgrims" by John S. C. Abbott published by Dood, Mead & Company in New York. The book is a biography of Miles Standish, a general who was important to the founding of the Plymouth Colony. From his early years in England to his military service in the Netherlands and, ultimately, his voyage to America on the Mayflower, it details Standish's life. Abbott presents Standish as a courageous and capable leader who played a crucial role in the Plymouth Colony's early survival. Standish is credited with concluding treaties with the local Native American tribes and organizing military expeditions to protect the colony from intruders. In addition, Standish's relationship with William Bradford, John Alden and other Plymouth Colony residents, as well as his courtship and marriage to Barbara, are covered in the book. The book shows a red cloth hardcover with black embossed images on the front of a Native American war party confronting the Pilgrims. The spine shows Miles Standish's name, the author and the publishers with an embossed image of a rifle and a bow. The book shows good condition despite its antique age with some wear to the edges of the cover and wear to the spine. The interior pages show good condition with some slight foxing throughout but is still in good readable condition. The book measures 7 9/16" L x 5 3/16" W x 1 1/8" D.
