A 19th Century Southern Plains Beaded Male Doll

This is a beautiful Southern Plains Indian hide beaded male warrior doll in full costume dating to the 19th Century likely from the Arapaho or Cheyenne. The doll shows a full Indian tanned hide body, likely stuffed with animal hair, sinew sewn and covered in traditional clothing. The head is bare of facial features and shows a frilly patch of Buffalo / Bison hair. The piece shows a beaded war shirt with a geometric and cross design in 19th Century glass trade seed beads and nice fringes along with a beaded breast plate, all of which is done in greasy white, greasy Cheyenne pink, greasy yellow, semi-transparent green, chalk white, and sky padre light blue. There is a small patch of red stroud clothe at the bib of the shirt. The bottom shows a loin clothe and leggings of dark navy blue stroud and red trade clothe with beaded features. There are beaded moccasins with a Buffalo track pattern all in similar colors and of correct early age, as well as sinew sewn. Provenance: From a private collection of Native American Antiquities Santa Fe, New Mexico. Uncommon to see dolls from the 19th Century depicting warrior men. Measures 11 inches long by 4 ¾ inches wide.
