Featured in this lot is this Al Furstnow Saddlery Miles City, MT #489 saddle. Al Furstnow worked for Ernest Goettlich in Miles City, Montana in 1884. Later that same year Furstnow opened his own saddle shop and Charles Coggshell became a partner in 1890. In 1895 the partnership split and their saddle shops sat side by side in Miles City. Al Furstnow became one of the premiere saddle makers in Montana, and the American West. His saddles were so well known, that cowboys of the period would refer to their rig as their “Furstnow.”. Miles City was a terminal for the free open range and cowboys from the Texas and Oregon cattle drives. Al Furstnow died in 1923. Furstnow saddles are now one of the most desirable collector saddles. The saddle features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction shows a high back seat with a nickel horn that shows a nickel decorated pair of monel's with intricate tooling to the skirt and fenders. The saddle is marked on the seat as follows: Al Furstnow - Miles City, Montana - 489. The condition of this Al Furstnow saddle is preserved with the skirt showing detached from the tree and some wear tot he leather adorning the saddle but otherwise is preserved. The overall measurements of this saddle is 31" x 16 1/4" x 22" and the seat size 14 1/2".
