Featured in this lot are Antique Mandalian, Lamp Shade style design metal mesh purses (3) with the patented "Lustro-Pearl" finish, circa 1920s-1930s. Whiting & Davis and Mandalian "Flapper" styled purses were very popular in the 1920s and '30s. Mandalian are especially prized by collectors due to their quality and rarity, and are known for the vibrancy of their colours even after one hundred years have elapsed since their manufacture. Many collectors consider the enamelling on Mandalian bags as superior to other makes. Some collectors state that connecting ‘spiders’ are stronger & thicker than the other brands of this time which means they are more sound & less likely to break. The colours and designs of these purses are stunning, the "fish scale" appearance is striking. The metal frames have a Victorian scroll embossed floral design with a "kissing" lock closure on two purses. Metal paperclip style carrying chains. No obvious marring observed, the gold and silver tones are still visible, rich patina exhibited throughout each. Measurements excluding fringe and chain are 7"L x 4.5"W, 6.5"L x 3.25"W, and 5.75"L x 3"W approximately. Combines weight is 400 grams.
