Presented in this lot is an Alaskan Yupik Coiled Grass Basket, mid 20th century. Western Alaska's coiled baskets, not woven, spiral upward from a center knot in a spray of about five strands, the stacked curls sewn together with sinew or more fragile grass thread, a stripped leaf’s midvein. Imbrication, a relief suggesting strung beads, involves folding a decorative element such as horsetail root or bear grass under every stitch. These techniques demand patience. The intricate art of coil weaving grass into beautiful grass baskets is some of the finest, most delicate and artistic forms of Alaskan native craftsmanship. This lidded basket four sets of vertical coloured/dyed lines at 90 degree intervals on the outside, while inside are five offsetting vertical line sets at 90 degrees apart. The lid mirrors the same design scheme. The basket is well preserved in very good condition. Measures 6.25" diameter, 5.5"H, weight is U6.
