Featured in this lot are two Alexander Martin photographs taken at Grand Lake in Middle Park, Colorado in 1898. Alexander Martin (1841-1929) was a Scottish-born photographer who became one of Colorado's most successful commercial photographers from the 1870s to around 1901. He established his first studio in Boulder in 1874 and later worked in Central City, Georgetown, and several places in Denver, regularly changing residences as his business expanded. Martin created a variety of photographic views, including elaborate cabinet cards, stereographs, and street scenes, depicting mining towns, railroads, mountain scenery, and everyday life in Georgetown, Denver, Boulder, Cripple Creek, Leadville, and Idaho Springs. He passed away in Denver, Colorado in November 1929. The first photo shows Grand Lake from the South and he reached that location by taking the C & S R.R. ( Colorado and Southern Rail Road). The Colorado and Southern Railway Company was established in Colorado on December 19, 1898, and served Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. The Colorado and Southern Railway Company was created on January 11, 1899, when it acquired the Union Pacific, Denver and Gulf Railway Company and the Denver, Leadville, and Gunnison Railway Company, all of which were former Union Pacific subsidiary. Some washed up old trees can be seen on the shoreline while towering mountains take up the background. The bottom is marked reading, "Reached Via C & S R.R. / 3828. This photo shows Grand Lake in the background with mountains towering over it. Just in front of the lake are various buildings and houses scattered throughout the valley. The photos show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. They measure 5" L x 8" W and have a collective weight of under 6 ounces.
